It’s that time of year in college football where many coaches around the nation will be handed their pink slip.
It’s a time of year I can do without.
The same goes for college basketball, only their pink slips come in April. Tom Izzo, men’s head basketball at Michigan State University once said, ‘you are hired to be fired‘.
He had a solid point.
Down in South Bend, Indiana the ‘Charlie Weiss watch’ is officially on. I spent this past weekend in Chicago and the Tribune was having a field day with Weiss.
MLive.com has a piece on who should be the new Eastern Michigan head football coach.
Former WMU assistant basketball coach Cornell Mann once told me that Detroit Mercy should hire a basketball coach that players really want to play for. Nobody goes to the corner of Livernois and McNichols just for the opportunity to play.
No one likes to see anyone get fired, it’s not fun, especially if that coach has a family and NOT a guaranteed contract. Some guys get whacked with a little bit of financial security, some don’t.
It’s funny because when guys get hired, they receive a million phone calls from people looking to join their staff; but when the same guy gets fired, no one calls them to see how they’re doing.
‘When I was hired as head coach, everyone was my best friend’, a former college basketball coach told me. ‘But when I was fired three years later, I didn’t hear from anyone’.
Good luck to all the coaches who do get fired and even more luck to the ones out of work looking for a job.
