RPM to Toyota, and other car maker talks large this week

A partnership with Nationwide Series Toyota team Braun Racing begins this weekend (with Elliott Sadler in the No. 10) for Richard Petty Motorsports and rumors are rampant about the future manufacturer of that team. Reports surfaced this week that RPM is considering putting marquee driver Kasey Kahne in a No. 9 Sprint Cup Series Toyota in the next month and a half, but those sources say that change likely will not happen midseason.

TV Times - A “Real” Racer Has To Have A Name Like “Speed”

3 Wide Life is a show about real racers. A “real” racer eats, sleeps and breaths racing. Occasionally, they are born with a name that doesn’t give them a chance at doing anything else. Such is the case for NASCAR newcomer, Scott Speed.

“It’s my real name,” says Speed. “It was my dad’s name and he passed it on to me. It’s not like I HAD to race, but it certainly seems that if you walk around with a name like ‘Speed’ that people will assume that’s what you are born to do. I don’t know if that’s what I was born to do, but the name has definitely helped me out with opportunities over the years.”

Labonte and Petty split; GEM-Petty deal still unannounced

Another piece of Petty Enterprises is breaking away. 2000 Cup champion Bobby Labonte, driver of the famed No. 43 Dodge announced his plans to leave the team, citing PE’s uncertain future as his reasoning. This announcement comes in the wake of rumors surfacing last week that PE is in discussions with Gillett Evernham Motorsports about letting GEM make the No. 43 car its 4th team.

Headlines and speculation regarding the merger and sometimes consolidation of race teams have permeated many NASCAR conversations and stories this season.

In the last week or two, rumors regarding a merger between Petty Enterprises and Dale Earnhardt Inc. seemed close to being fact. Now, there is talk that Ganassi Racing (which fields Dodges) and Petty enterprises may be in negotiations about merging.
