RPM to Toyota, and other car maker talks large this week

FastCar Newsdesk for New Hampshire Motor Speedway, week of 6/25/09

A partnership with Nationwide Series Toyota team Braun Racing begins this weekend (with Elliott Sadler in the No. 10) for Richard Petty Motorsports and rumors are rampant about the future manufacturer of that team. Reports surfaced this week that RPM is considering putting marquee driver Kasey Kahne in a No. 9 Sprint Cup Series Toyota in the next month and a half, but those sources say that change likely will not happen midseason.

Richmond - Who’s Hot and Who’s Not

Richmond produced a wild finish this time last year. Dale Earnhardt Jr. was on a 71 race drought and within just 3 laps of a victory when he slammed into the wall in turn 3 after Kyle Busch slid up the track into his No. 88 as they both battled for the lead on lap 398. Kyle was showered with beer cans over the catch fence as the cars circled the track under caution before the green white checkered.

Deal in place for ‘Dinger team through mid-September

FastCar Newsdesk for week of 4/9/09
A.J. Allmendinger will have at least have a shot at making The Chase this year and Hunt Brothers Pizza is the latest company he and the No. 44 team have to thank. Richard Petty Motorsports officials announced this week that the pizza chain will sponsor the team for six races, giving RPM’s fourth Cup team sponsorship through the September 12th race in Richmond, the last race before The Chase begins.

Richard Petty Motorsports making room for Super 8 on No. 43 and 44 cars; other teams lacking funds

FastCar Newsdesk for Las Vegas Motor Speedway, for week of 2/26/09
A sagging economy and a trip to Vegas keep money fresh in the minds of many on the NASCAR circuit. A flurry of teams around the Sprint Cup garage lack full sponsorship for the 2009 season, including Richard Petty Motorsports. Driver Reed Sorenson and the famed No. 43 team have sponsorship for the majority of races this year and have come closer to having a sponsor in each race, with the addition of Super 8 Motels as a primary sponsor for an undisclosed schedule of races this season. Super 8 may also sponsor the No. 44 of A.J. Allmendinger in some races; that team is not scheduled to run each race, unless sponsorship arises. Harrah’s colors will be on that entry this week in Las Vegas.

Several start up teams make the long trek to California, despite missing 500

FastCar Newsdesk for Auto Club Speedway, week of 2/19/09
The biggest draw to making the Daytona 500 field, besides the allure of racing in NASCAR’s biggest race, is the payday that is assured any team that makes the show. With the consolidation and shut down of several Sprint Cup teams, several spots opened up for new teams to try and run the season schedule. Several teams, like the No. 66 Prism Motorsports team, the Tommy Baldwin Racing No. 36, Travis Kvapil and the No. 28 Yates Racing entry, and Jeremy Mayfield’s No. 41, made the Great American Race and are planning a full schedule. Others were not so lucky, but are still attempting Sunday’s Auto Club Speedway.

Looking Back At Favorites From Daytona History

Yes, I got the itch to write again. Who knows, this might just become a regular thing.

Did you know that I was just 4 yrs old when the first checkered flag droped at Daytona? The winner, Lee Petty in an Oldsmobile.

Favorite 500 win of all time, Geoff Bodine driving for Rick Hendrick.

Favorite Daytona wreck? Richard Petty and David Pearson in a grinding last lap crash.

Favorite Daytona race? The Permatex 300. Short track stars came from all over the country to show their stuff on the high banks.

Favorite Daytona race car, a tie between the Studebakers of the modifed sportsman ranks and Ricxhard Petty’s 64 Plymouth.

RPM and Allmendinger officially align; Evernham opens up about future

FastCar Newsdesk for week of 1/29/09
Though A.J. Allmendinger’s name has been thrown around as a Gillet Evernham Motorsports and Richard Petty Motorsports driver for months, he officially had not been signed by the team, until Wednesday. RPM has signed Allmendinger to run at least 10 races in the No. 44 Dodge this season and may run more, pending sponsorship. The team has an option to keep the third year Cup driver with the team in 2010 as well. If RPM obtains sponsorship for the team, it will field Allmendinger and the No. 44 in more races this year and, again pending sponsorship, would like the field the No. 44 in every race next season.

Richard Petty Motorsports, paint schemes and new teams among week’s news

FastCar Newsdesk for NASCAR Media Tour 2009, 1/23/09
Now in its third decade, few are surprised by the sheer volume of announcements made public during the circus that is the NASCAR Media Tour. A pool of reporters makes the rounds to teams’ race shops and other NASCAR points of interest in the Charlotte area during this time of January every year. Most teams seize this moment to activate their 2009 brands, by debuting paint schemes, announcing final driver lineups and sponsorship additions, and to clear up any other unknowns that existed during the offseason. Given the current state of sponsorship and economic flux, some of this week’s announcements left more questions than answers.
