6th Grade Quarterback Being Recruited

When you hear stories about guys like Billy Butler, you start to wonder about the Current State of College Recruiting.  Is a guy like Butler altruistically putting aside his own profit-making plans to help high school kids make good decisions about where to play collegiate football, or is it all a plot to add some bucks to his bankroll while making it seem that he has the kids’ best interests in mind?  You already know my opinion.  Besides the multiple runners trying to have an influence on the decisions that these kids will make concerning college and selecting an agent, scouts, families, and agents are destroying youth athletics by th

The NBDL Expands To Portland, Maine

While the economy has taken its toll on the Continental Basketball Association (CBA), forcing a shortened 2008/09 season and causing many involved in the league to worry about its future, the National Basketball Developmental League (NBDL) seems to be doing just fine.  Many leagues are firing executives and freezing salaries.  The NBDL is expanding.  Portland, Maine will have its own team come the 2009/10 NBDL season and Jon Jennings, former Boston Celtics assistant coach, will be the Presid

Combine Over, Now The Fun Starts

The NFL Combine has come and gone.  I thoroughly enjoyed watching the players run their 40’s and do their max reps of 225 lbs.  I believe that NFL Network did a great job covering the event.  If only the network went from school to school to cover their Pro Days, which begin today and go until late March.

Do Your Clients Need A Wingman?

Not interested in sending your clients to Blackwater Worldwide for some good old fashioned firearm training?  What if you have highly controversial clients who like heading out to the clubs that may not be the best scenes for iced out necks and bling on the wrist?  Might want to call in a guy like Julian Jones.  Some call him a wingman; others a babysitterHis specialty is in preparation, and he does his best to steer athletes away from potential trouble.  He has worked with some of the biggest names in professi

America’s Top Baller

On January 28th, I let you in on a casting call for a new show coming soon that will be hosted by Michael Irvin on SpikeTV.  It will be a reality show with six wide-receivers and six defensivebacks battling out for a spot on the Dallas Cowboys Training Camp Roster.  Casting has wrapped up, and a combine will begin shortly to select the twelve who will be on the show.  A lot of buzz has picked up surrounding this future show and it seems like a former NBA player wants to copy the idea in a basketball setting.

The Superpest Returns

Sean Avery has returned to the ice in his first competitive week of hockey since being suspended indefinitely by the Dallas Stars.  Avery played his first game with New York Rangers’ affiliate, the Hartford Wolfpack, on February 14th.  Most are familiar with his long history of controversial comments and a good summary of his antics can be found here.  Allegations include, most notably, Avery chirping Jason Blake about battling cancer and making a statement to the press that he wonders why certain players (Dion Phaneuf) like his “sloppy s

Train Your Clients To Use Firearms?

Professional firearm training is important for individuals that constantly find themselves in positions where their lives are in danger.  That is why it is understandable that all American diplomats get such training before starting their work in foreign countries.  There have been many attacks/planned attacks on American embassies overseas.  But what about professional athletes?  Are their lives so threatened that professional firearm training should be suggested to them?  Apparently, there is a market to train said athletes, even though up to this point, no athletes have signed up for the service.

From the Gridiron to the Golden Globes….Maybe

Do you remember the days when guys like Jim Brown and Carl Weathers brought their NFL toughness to the big screen?  Well I don’t, because I’m too young, but that’s beside the point.  I still enjoy watching Carl Weathers and Stallone go at it every time I watch the Rocky series, which is on marathon-style almost every weekend if you hadn’t noticed.  How come we barely see the bad boys of the NFL in big Hollywood films anymore?  Instead, we see Emmitt Smith and Warren Sapp on the silver screen, wearing dance shoes.

Less Money…Moore Golf

This might be a first in the annals of modern sport.  Ryan Moore, who placed 6th in last week’s FBR Open, has entered the new season void of any sponsorships.  If anyone caught part of that tournament you could have seen Moore rocking a pair of Puma shoes with spikes attached, a tie, and a short-billed hat.  Once covered in Ping attire, the rising golfer decided that he wanted to get back to the game in its purest form.  That meant shedding the demands of sponsors to wear a certain hat or play a brand of club.  Moore had this to say about the new situation:

A Month Until I Get To Show Off My Florida Gator Putter

Brian Allman of Sweet Spot Golf is my man.  He is a long-time reader of SportsAgentBlog.com and makes sure to check in with me at least once a week, even if it is to just chat about a story on the blog.  He also happens to have a great company in Sweet Spot Golf and is a part of a small class of young entrepreneurs who have a vision and run with it.  Recently, he sent me a specially crafted University of Florida Gators putter, but unfortunately, sent it to my address in South Florida.  While I won’t be able to fully enjoy the putter or let you in on its performance until March, I have a few pictures to throw up here for the time being.

Schackman’s 2009 NFL Mock Draft - Part 1

With the Super Bowl out of the way it’s now time to focus on the next biggest event: The NFL Draft.

1. Detroit Lions: Matthew Stafford (QB, Georgia)

-Stafford is the only player that makes sense here for the Lions. As crazy as it sounds the Lions do have some weapons on offense. Now they need a long term signal caller.

2. St. Louis Rams: Andre Smith (OT, Alabama)

-With Orlando Pace’s career coming to an end, the Rams will be looking for his replacement at the number 2 spot. While Smith may have some issue with his pass blocking, he is an absolute road grader with a ton of upside.

The NFL Combine Is Exactly Two Weeks Away

Rulon Davis has been invited, Kevin Grant has not.  We are happy that Rulon will have another chance to blow away coaches and scouts, as he did at the Texas vs. The Nation game.  We are also not disappointed about Grant, since all signs from his training facility point to him blowing away scouts at the Akron Pro Day, and his trainers have nothing but amazing things to say about Grant’s character.  But onto NFL Combine talk…

Unfortunate News From CBA Headquarters

The Continental Basketball Association employs many talented athletes and coaches, and has provided an excellent venue for athletes to show their skill before making a jump to the D-League or overseas for over fifty years.  At the end of 2008, I heard a rumor that the CBA was thinking about folding after not finding enough funding to finance its teams.  That worry was eventually put aside, and the 2008-09 season began, with Dynasty clients on a few of the rosters.  Yesterday, a press release from the CBA affirmed what many of us feared back in 2008.

Your Thoughts On WAMMA

The World Alliance of Mixed-Martial Arts (”WAMMA”) describes itself as “a multifaceted, fan and fighter-forward organization dedicated to promoting the integrity, legitimacy and longevity of Mixed Martial Arts.” [WAMMA's Mission Statement] They use the phrase “One Belt, One King” to demonstrate the sport of MMA needs one organizing body to rank fighters across promotions (UFC, Affliction, etc.) so the world can know who the real champion is in a given weight class.  So far, the UFC is not playing along, and with no UFC participation, many wonder whether WAMMA can achieve its lofty goals.
