RPM to Toyota, and other car maker talks large this week

FastCar Newsdesk for New Hampshire Motor Speedway, week of 6/25/09

A partnership with Nationwide Series Toyota team Braun Racing begins this weekend (with Elliott Sadler in the No. 10) for Richard Petty Motorsports and rumors are rampant about the future manufacturer of that team. Reports surfaced this week that RPM is considering putting marquee driver Kasey Kahne in a No. 9 Sprint Cup Series Toyota in the next month and a half, but those sources say that change likely will not happen midseason.

Pocono - Who’s Hot

Kasey Kahne was last year’s pole and race winner. He would battle back after a pit road miscue, leaving with loose lugs. Other drivers stayed out while he took fuel and tires. He was able to easily outrun the gamblers Brian Vickers and Dale Earnhardt Jr. for the win.

Kahne is not the only strong one here as far as the numbers go; you will even be surprised who is on the list! Read on, as we examine who’s hot at Pocono and who is on a current hot streak.

Deal in place for ‘Dinger team through mid-September

FastCar Newsdesk for week of 4/9/09
A.J. Allmendinger will have at least have a shot at making The Chase this year and Hunt Brothers Pizza is the latest company he and the No. 44 team have to thank. Richard Petty Motorsports officials announced this week that the pizza chain will sponsor the team for six races, giving RPM’s fourth Cup team sponsorship through the September 12th race in Richmond, the last race before The Chase begins.

New teams, small teams, and part-time teams… who will shine?

Image from EM Motorsports/Jayski

I was thinking about all the teams trying to get into the Daytona 500, so I decided to put together a list of some of the new teams, smaller teams, and part-time teams that will potentially be seen on the track in the Sprint Cup Series this year.

These are the teams that (unfortunately) you will likely never see on television coverage of the races, unless they happen to wreck spectacularly, or cause one of the top 12 teams to wreck. Regardless of whether you like that or not, such is the way it is.

Below is the list of teams in no particular order, and my thoughts about how they’ll do. Feel free to leave your own comments and opinions in the comment section below, after the list.

Labonte and Petty split; GEM-Petty deal still unannounced

FastCar Newsdesk for week of 12/11/08

Another piece of Petty Enterprises is breaking away. 2000 Cup champion Bobby Labonte, driver of the famed No. 43 Dodge announced his plans to leave the team, citing PE’s uncertain future as his reasoning. This announcement comes in the wake of rumors surfacing last week that PE is in discussions with Gillett Evernham Motorsports about letting GEM make the No. 43 car its 4th team.

Big E is rolling over in his grave

The empire Dale Earnhardt built to promote his family racing genes and continue the legacy of his racing prowess has now become watered down to become Earnhardt Ganassi Racing.

While rumors have been swirling around both teams for weeks, I am still stunned to see the once powerful DEI merge with anyone.

While DEI and Ganassi have obviously both been struggling as of late, you would have thought DEI was the stronger player with Martin Truex, Jr. still in the fold. But with Mark Martin leaving in 2009 and Aric Almirola as the only other driver in the DEI stable, 20009 had to be looking pretty grim. In fact, DEI has been looking pretty grim ever since Dale Jr. left to join Hendrick.
