Can’t Beat ‘Em? Take Their Players

I normally don’t post about individual commitments or recruiting updates in general, but I think this is fairly important. Tennessee got another defensive lineman - tackle, specifically - to join the group for 2010 in the form of John Brown.

This is important for two reasons. First, Brown is transferring from the University of Florida to Northeast Mississippi Junior College in the fall to likely an early enrollee at Tennessee in December or January (he says he will sign with the Vols as soon as he can).

Wednesday Quick Hits: Michigan to Play at Kansas in Basketball

  • Michigan is going to play at Kansas on December 19. Not only is this a tough matchup based on the fact that Kansas is going to be one of the nation's top teams next season, but Allen Fieldhouse is one of the toughest venues to play at in all of college basketball. This game is part of a home-and-home series, meaning Kansas will come to Ann Arbor in the 2010-11 season. (HT: UM Hoops)

This Is Good Stuff

I think I’ve made my disdain for the University of Memphis Tigers basketball program pretty well-known. So when I got a text message from my dad last night in the middle of the Lakers-Nuggets game alerting me of the allegations against the Tigers, I must admit I got a kick out of it.

The Tigers’ best season, where they won 38 games and should have won a national championship (thank you Mario Chalmers), now apparently will be null-and-void.

Wednesday Quick Hits: Michigan to Play Utah in Basketball

  • Michigan is going to play at Utah on December 9 as part of its non-conference basketball schedule. When it was announced that Michigan and Utah were going to open last football season against each other, there was some mention about basketball games being played between the two schools down the road. Considering that, I imagine Utah will come to Crisler Arena sometime in the next few years, as this seems like it would be a home-and-home series.
  • A track star from Rochester Adams is going to walk on to the Michigan football team as a receiver.

Tuesday Quick Hits: Michigan to Play Alabama in WCWS

  • Michigan will play No. 4-seeded Alabama in the Women's College World Series on Thursday. The game begins at 7 p.m. (on ESPN), and the winner moves on to face the winner of the Florida-Arizona game. The loser heads to the loser's bracket, where it takes only one more loss to end a team's season.
  • Similar to Tom Izzo's amazing milestone of having every player who stays for four years and was recruited by him go to a Final Four, every player Carol Hutchins has recruited since 1991 has gone to a College World Series.

Michigan Loses S&C Coach Mike Curtis to Virginia

Via UM Hoops, Michigan strength and conditioning coach Mike Curtis is headed to Virginia, his alma mater. Curtis was the S&C coach for both the men's and women's basketball teams. He came to Michigan in 2008 after working for the Memphis Grizzlies in the NBA, and his impact was very noticeable last season. He isn't an Internet sensation like Mike Barwis, but there is no doubt that the impact he had on Michigan was pretty big. Many factors played a part in Michigan's improvement and NCAA tournament run, and Curtis was one of those factors.

Monday Quick Hits: Softball Wins Big Ten Title, Will Host Regional

  • 1,369 returning students have bought 2009-10 basketball season tickets. Once incoming freshman get a chance to purchase tickets, that number could easily rise to 2,000. Considering only 480 season tickets were sold last year, this is great news. The Maize Rage should be filled for every game and the atmosphere at Crisler should be taken to a new level. Hopefully the team will continue to improve and ticket sales will get to the point where the bleachers have to be expanded. Right now the plan is to seat students in the bleachers until they fill up and then put them behind the band.
