RPM to Toyota, and other car maker talks large this week

FastCar Newsdesk for New Hampshire Motor Speedway, week of 6/25/09

A partnership with Nationwide Series Toyota team Braun Racing begins this weekend (with Elliott Sadler in the No. 10) for Richard Petty Motorsports and rumors are rampant about the future manufacturer of that team. Reports surfaced this week that RPM is considering putting marquee driver Kasey Kahne in a No. 9 Sprint Cup Series Toyota in the next month and a half, but those sources say that change likely will not happen midseason.

TV Times - Does NASCAR Treat The “Little Guy” Differently?

Columnist Ernie Saxton, in his MY TWO CENTS WORTH Column in Area Auto Racing News (Tuesday, June 9, 2009) talked about suspended NASCAR driver/crewman Carl Long and the circumstances surrounding his problems with NASCAR.

As usual it’s a controversy that has polarized those who think that NASCAR made a big deal out a slight infraction, which was 0.17 oversize cubic inches.

Depending who you talk to about it, you get a different opinion. In this case NASCAR is the only one that counts and Long got a 12-week suspension along with a 200 grand fine plus the loss of 200 points.

This year’s startup teams struggling mightily

FastCar Newsdesk for Michigan International Speedway, week of 6/11/09

The promise that once blew strong in the sails of 2009’s Sprint Cup Series startup teams is nothing more than a whispering breeze now. The car count for the opening races of 2009 (excluding the outlier Daytona 500) was around 50 cars, but as the stronger of the teams started knocking the others out of races via qualifying, some of the teams that were planning on running a full schedule trimmed back their plans. Teams like the No. 27 of Kirk Schelmerdine Racing, the No. 64 of Gunselman Motorsports, the No. 51 of Black Jack Racing, the No. 73 owned by Mike Garvey had all at some point planned on full schedules, but then backed off of that goal.

TV Times - Cup Ratings Turnaround Possible?

We think that NASCAR and the Sprint Car Series has an opportunity, right now, to turn things around in the ratings. The sanction should let the drivers be themselves much like Kyle Busch as last weekend at Pocono when he destroyed an expensive custom built guitar. Much like some the rock stars do in their performances on stage. His explanation was that he wanted to give his winning crew a memento. Some of what we are talking about is drivers and crewman involved in some on track controversy including physical contact.

NASCAR Announces “Double-File Restarts – Shootout Style” For The NASCAR Sprint Cup Series

Fan Favorite Format Change Begins This Week At Pocono

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (June 4, 2009) – The National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing (NASCAR) today announced a change to its race format with the addition of “Double-File Restarts – Shootout Style” throughout each race. Beginning with this weekend at Pocono Raceway, the first- and second-place drivers will line up side-by-side as the green flag flies for each restart.

“We’ve heard the fans loud and clear: ‘double-file restarts – shootout style’ are coming to the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series,” said NASCAR Chairman and CEO Brian France. “This addition to the race format is good for competition and good for the fans.”

FastCar Newsdesk - Tony Jr. out as Dale Jr.’s crew chief; McGrew named as replacement

FastCar Newsdesk for Dover International Speedway, week of 5/28/09

Tony Eury Jr.’s tumultuous tenure as crew chief for his cousin Dale Earnhardt Jr. is over. Thursday, Rick Hendrick, owner of Hendrick Motorsports, announced that Lance McGrew is replacing Eury Jr. on the No. 88 team just days after the National Guard Chevy finished a dismal 40th place at Lowe’s Motor Speedway with handling issues.

“Our performance hasn’t been where it should be,” Hendrick said. “It’s impossible to pin that on any one factor, but a change is the right decision at this point. We have a plan in place, and we’re going to move forward with it.”
